The vivo V30 Pro and HONOR 200 Pro are very attractive smartphones within the RM2000 smartphone category, they boast unique beautiful designs, respectable specs sheet and more notably, they are marketed as portrait camera phones, which brings us to this interesting editorial to find out which one has better portrait photography capabilities.
One of the biggest improvements vivo has made on the vivo V30 Pro over the previous model is introducing triple 50MP ZEISS cameras, which elevates the photography experience on upper mid-range phones for the first time with flagship grade camera hardware. Coupled with a larger Aura Light 3.0 ring light that automatically adjusts color temperature based on different lighting scenarios, the vivo V30 Pro brightens and beautifies faces in low-light situations effortlessly.
As for the HONOR 200 Pro, it boasts excellent flagship grade hardware internals with a similar camera setup as the vivo V30 Pro, it has optically stabilized 50MP main and telephoto sensors, while its ultrawide camera is unfortunately a lower 12MP sensors, the cameras merely have a standard LED flash that brightens up shots in low light, which can cause photos to look unnatural, but on a side note, the company has partnered with Studio Harcourt in Paris for color tuning on portraits.
However, which one is the better portrait expert?
In general lighting, you can see that both phones take decent portrait photos with good subject separation. However, the HONOR 200 Pro’s color processing has made my face darker and doesn’t beautify my face imperfections, where as the vivo V30 Pro produces a more favorable shot with a brighter face while doing skin smoothening very naturally, not to mention the details on my shirt and sling bag are sharper than the HONOR 200 Pro.
Coming to low light portraits, this is where the vivo V30 Pro begins to show its advantage with its Aura Light 3.0, it brightens up my face with a natural tone and all thanks to the ZEISS T* lens coating, the light reflections on my glasses are greatly reduced. The HONOR 200 Pro processes my low light portrait as if there is a studio lighting that creates a contoured shade on the right side of my face, while there’s no way to turn off the Studio Harcourt portrait style if you prefer a more natural skin tone.
While the HONOR 200 Pro comes with three Studio Harcourt portrait styles, vivo has a set of ZEISS bokeh styles that can make your portraits more immersive, these bokeh effects can also be applied to the front 50MP selfie camera, which isn’t possible on the HONOR 200 Pro.
Despite being the better portrait expert, the vivo V30 Pro is priced RM100 lower than its competition at RM2,599, which makes it a better choice if you want the best portrait photography smartphone, head here to purchase the vivo V30 Pro.
