Nets re-sign C Nic Claxton to four-year deal

The Nets are officially heading into a deep rebuild over the next few years after trading Mikal Bridges to the Knicks for a bevy of future draft picks, but they’ve retained one of their big young pieces to help spearhead that youth movement.

Center Nic Claxton has agreed to re-sign with Brooklyn on a four-year, $100 million deal.

Claxton has developed into a strong two-way talent since being selected with a second-round pick in the 2019 Draft, and now he’s officially set to be a cornerstone piece for the Nets for the foreseeable future.

“We are thrilled to have Nic remain in Brooklyn as a core player for our team going forward,” GM Sean Marks said in a statement. “With his outstanding work ethic and dedication, we know that Nic will continue to be relentless in his efforts to maximize his potential and expand his game.”

Claxton finished fifth in Most Improved Player voting after averaging a career-high 12.6 points, hauling in 9.2 rebounds per game, and shooting a stellar 70 percent from the field two seasons ago.

He built off that this year by putting together another impressive campaign in which he averaged 11.8 points and a career-high 9.9 rebounds while shooting 63 percent from the field.

Claxton was set to be one of the most intriguing young big men on the open market this offseason, but Brooklyn made sure they locked him up before he could field offers on the open market.

The 25-year-old will now look to continue improving under the tutelage of first-year head man Jordi Fernandez and his new coaching staff this season.
