NYC increases number of detainees to be held at borough-based jails that will replace Rikers

A man unfurls a banner in the City Council chambers during the vote on the plan to close Rikers Island and open four new borough-based jails. On the far right is Herb Sturz, a deputy mayor for Ed Koch, who has fought to close Rikers Island since the late 1970s.

The four jails set to be built in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Manhattan will each have room for 1,040 beds, or 154 more than previously planned. [ more › ]
