United Airlines’ New Flights To Nuuk, Greenland & Dakar, Senegal Now On Sale

The flights start at around $1,100 round trip and are part of the airline’s historic international expansion.

Passengers will be able to take advantage of the first direct service from Nuuk Airport to the United States when flights begin on June 14th, with the seasonal service running until September 25th. The flights will last around four hours and operate twice weekly at the following times to provide seamless connections across United’s North American network:

Flight

Days

Departure

Arrival

UA 80

Tuesday and Saturday

Newark – 11:30

Nuuk – 18:45

UA 81

Wednesday and Sunday

Nuuk – 08:00

Newark – 09:30

According to United, this allows travelers to connect to 89 destinations via Newark. Flights are already on sale from $1,150 or 80,000+ MileagePlus
frequent flyer miles round trip. When reached for comment for this piece, a United Airlines spokesperson highlighted how the new link will make Greenland more accessible to travelers nationwide:

“Nuuk is the gateway to Greenland, a destination known for its wide variety of artic adventures.”

“By providing a direct link to this destination that has been historically harder to reach via air travel, we believe Greenland has the potential to become a top-trending destination for those looking to travel off-the-beaten path.

The new flights have been made possible thanks to an $800 million airport development plan that will see three Greenlandic airports open to larger jet aircraft. The capital’s Nuuk International Airport
(GOH) has long been hampered by a short runway, which forced long-haul traffic to land at a former military base and transfer onto smaller aircraft to reach their final destination.

Greenland Greets The World With Widebody Flights As Nuuk International Airport Officially Opens

This marks the first time transatlantic flights can land in the nation’s capital, with United Airlines and SAS set to begin flights next summer.

A new runway opened in Nuuk at the end of November, and significant airport projects in the nation’s tourism center of Ilullisat (JAV) and Qaqortoq in South Greenland are expected to be completed in 2026.

All in with Air Greenland

The nation’s flag carrier, Air Greenland
, has naturally advocated for the new airport projects and will continue to connect the northernmost capital in the world to a range of destinations. With the opening of the new 2,200-meter runway, Air Greenland moved its base of operations from Kangerlussuaq (SFJ) down to Nuuk, where it plans to increase connection opportunities.

The carrier’s flagship route is to the Danish capital’s Copenhagen Airport
(CPH). As an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, the two cities have strong cultural and business ties. Simple Flying was onboard the first scheduled Air Greenland flight from Copenhagen to Nuuk, where it arrived to thousands of local residents lining the nearby mountainside to watch the historic arrival.

Inaugural Flight Review: Air Greenland Airbus A330-800neo From Copenhagen To Nuuk

The historic flight marked the first time Greenland’s capital received a widebody jet, paving the way for a significant expansion in the coming months

In addition to its Copenhagen route, the carrier has also chartered Boeing 737-800 operated by Jettime to operate summer routes to several other Danish cities. Next summer, the airline will add one direct weekly departure between Nuuk and Aalborg (AAL), and an extra flight per week will be added between Nuuk and Billund
(BLL) with a stopover in Keflavik. According to Jacob Nitter Sørensen, CEO of the Air Greenland Group, the new links are among the most-requested routes:

“We have flown Aalborg – Kangerlussuaq via Copenhagen in 2024, and our analyses show that there is good interest from customers. However, many have requested a direct route and with the opening of Nuuk International Airport, we can now offer a direct route in the summer timetable.

“By adding an extra weekly flight between Nuuk and Billund with a stopover in Keflavik, we open for travellers to and from North America and Greenland on the Nuuk – Keflavik route. On the route between Billund and Keflavik, we cooperate with Icelandair to sell seats on this route. We see a market in positive development, where many people want to fly from Jutland to Iceland and vice versa, and we hope that customers will welcome this.”

Air Greenland has been working closely with the other North Atlantic flag carriers Icelandair and Atlantic Airways
of the Faroe Islands (Denmark’s other autonomous territory in the region), to develop a cooperative partnership that allows for seamless travel to and from North America and Europe across all three networks.

Speaking of Icelandair, the carrier has long served Greenland from its hub at the relatively nearby Keflavik International Airport
(KEF) in Iceland. The airline serves four gateways in Greenland. Flights from Keflavik to Nuuk and Kulusuk (KUS) operate year-round, while Ilullisat and Narsarsuaq (UAK) are served on a more seasonal basis.

Exploring Iceland On A Long Stopover: The Simple Flying Guide

Icelandic carriers Icelandair and PLAY give passengers the unique opportunity to tour the island before continuing their journey.

All Icelandair
flights between Iceland and Greenland now use Keflavík International Airport for arrivals and departures to make international connections easier. There are no longer flights between Greenland and Reykjavík Domestic Airport (RKV), as the airlines are working together to increase the connectivity options from Greenland to Europe and North America while boosting Iceland as a stopover destination for a two-for-one Arctic adventure.

Soaring high with SAS

Scandinavian Air Systems ( SAS
) is the flag carrier of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The airline has gone through a relatively recent restricting process that left the Danish state as the largest remaining government stakeholder of the three nations and saw the airline refocus its global route network to Copenhagen. SAS has served Greenland on and off for decades but has officially confirmed it will begin flights from Copenhagen in June

SAS Announces Summer Flights To Greenland’s Newly Expanded Nuuk Airport

Greenland will see new routes in 2025.

The service will run three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with an Airbus A320neo. Anko van der Werff, President and CEO of SAS, noted how the flight will boost connections to Greenland for frequent flyers in the airline’s new home in the SkyTeam
Alliance:

“We’re thrilled to enhance connectivity between Greenland, Scandinavia and destinations worldwide through our SkyTeam alliance.

“This new route meets the rising demand for unique, adventurous travel experiences, while reinforcing Copenhagen’s position as a key hub for Scandinavian connections worldwide.”

The presence of SAS in the market opens opportunities for Delta Air Lines
passengers to use their SkyMiles on flights to Greenland. Since joining the SkyTeam Alliance, SAS has launched a flurry of new routes to the United States, which provides for new one-stop flights to Nuuk from gateways across the US, including Atlanta (ATL) and Seattle-Tacoma (SEA).

And then there was Airseven

Charter carrier Airseven announced earlier this year that it will begin flights to Nuuk International Airport from Denmark. As opposed to the traditional gateway of Copenhagen, Airseven will deploy its Boeing 737-800
aircraft on a link from Aalborg, which will run from June 12th until September 1st.

Airseven To Launch Flight From Denmark To Greenland In Summer 2025

The service will last from June to September.

With Star Alliance flights from United and SkyTeam services from SAS, there is a notable absence of oneworld
Alliance airlines serving Greenland. The two most logical options are British Airways, from its base in London Heathrow, and Nordic stalwart Finnair
, which is based in Helsinki.

When asked by Simple Flying today about the possibility of serving Greenland next year, a representative from Finnair confirmed the airline is constantly reviewing its network in line with customer demand, but at this time there are no immediate plans to add flights to Greenland.
