Two Arkansas Companies Make TIME Top 1,000 List

TIME Magazine and German data and visualization platform Statista have compiled the top 1,000 companies of 2024, with two Arkansas-based companies making the list. Walmart earned the 44th spot, while J.B. Hunt Transport came in at 644.

According to the article by TIME, the rankings were based on a formula of employee-satisfaction surveys, revenue growth and data on environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG).

J.B. Hunt scored 84.9 overall, with a sustainability transparency rank of 543 and an employee satisfaction rank of 572. Their revenue growth was moderate.

Walmart, on the other hand, posted an “outstanding” revenue growth and had an overall score of 93.37. Their sustainability transparency rank was 393, while their employee satisfaction ranked 45th.

Over a third of the companies listed—almost 350 — were headquartered in the United States, with Apple topping the list at No. 1, followed by Microsoft at No. 3 and Amazon at No. 5. Accenture, based in Ireland, was the second-best company of the year, and BMW Group of Germany took the fourth slot.

“Apple also earned strong marks from employees, coming in fourth in employee satisfaction, but was propelled to the top of the rankings by its ESG rating, which was first out of all the companies,” TIME’s Alana Semuels wrote. “The tech giant has committed to being carbon neutral by 2030 and is making more products with recycled materials; in early 2024, it also became the first big tech company to achieve gender equality on its board of directors, now composed of four men and four women.”

North America (the US and Canada) and Europe dominated the top spots, with only four countries in the top 100 coming from South America and Asia—Brazil’s Banco do Brasil at No. 63, Japan’s Mizuho Financial Group at 83, Singapore’s Oversea-Chinese Banking at 90 and South Korea’s SK Group at 97. Companies from Africa and Oceania did not make the top 100.

America’s fiercest economic rival, China, only landed 34 companies on the list, their highest being JD.com, a retail website, at 283.

Grupo Gigante, from Mexico, ranked 1,000 at the bottom of the list. America’s lowest-ranked company was Atlas Holdings, ranked 995.
